What are Ocular Migraines? Let us first discuss a headache…our head feels heavy , there is a pressure build up behind ours eyes and the throbbing at our temples are so intense it resembles a beating drum…we’ve all had them and an analgesic like aspirin lessens the pain quite effectively or even closing your eyes for a while soothes it. Migraines are more severe headaches usually accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to bright lights, blurred vision as well as cold hands and feet. Ordinary analgesics are useless against the pain and sleep is the only defense against this attack on your vascular system. No other choice but to get off your feet and close your eyes because usually migraine incapacitates your ability to do your normal routine.
Ocular migraines are complicated to dissect because it is used also as a reference to two types of conditions. One type of such a condition is not acute and that is a migraine that affects your eye sight called migraine aura or a migraine with aura. It may also be accompanied with lack of sensation or numbness and is more common condition as opposed to the other. It is of no consequence and relatively short that is thirty to sixty minutes. It affects both of your eyes making them extremely sensitive to light or possibly causing either flashes of lightning bolts, bright floating lights, patchy dark spots or blurred or hazy visions that hinder you eye sight which is sometimes arguably the reason for many unidentified flying objects(UFO’s) seen but like I said, arguably meaning not proven. Extraterrestrials (ET’s) might still be out there and wants to go home. Okay enough of that, back to the point ocular migraines are normally referred to as a classic migraine although there are still variations to consider that amount to the same name and that is either a migraine with a prolonged aura or a typical aura which is not accompanied by a headache. Even though this particular type of migraine is not considered serious it could still be a symptom of chronic migraines.
The other condition is a retinal migraine but is commonly referred to as ocular migraines. This condition is considered very rare and affects frequent migraine sufferers. These migraines are accompanied with constant periods of weakened vision or blindness and may be preceded by a headache or joined by one. Unlike the migraine-with-aura this affects only one of the sufferer’s eyes.
Ocular migraines like any migraine should be analyzed with great care. Be sure to keep a diary and jot down the consistency of a migraine and the type you are suffering because quite often it is a defense mechanism of your body against something or a warning of a more serious ailment. Be especially vigilant when migraines involve the eyes if you are worried be sure to see a specialist. Remember to listen to your body.
